The tax deadline in the UK is today and whether you have nothing to pay, a manageable amount to pay or you’re stressing about the amount you have to conjure up out of thin air, how you feel about your tax bills will impact your income, here’s why:
Not having to cough up any money to pay HMRC on Jan 31st can feel like a relief. But how does it feel the rest of the year? If you’re capping your earnings because you don’t want to have to pay a larger tax bill, then you are limiting what you and your business are capable of in a huge way. And I’m willing to bet that doesn’t feel good.
If you’re doing this – consciously or subconsciously – then not only are you leaving money on the table, but you’re limiting the impact your work can have on the world. And you and I both know that the world needs what you have to offer.
If the thought of earning more and paying taxes, or paying more in taxes, stresses you out somehow, then spend some time reflecting on why. Is your brain trying to tell you that you’ll end up with less?
Do not let your brain trick you into believing in scarcity!
If you are telling yourself that you can’t bring in enough revenue to pay yourself and your taxes then you are sabotaging yourself.
It’s a recipe for disaster because you are restricting your financial growth, reducing the sustainability of your business, and preventing yourself from living your life from a place of abundance.
When you show up in the world, share what you have to offer and get paid for it, it’s beautiful for you and the people paying you.
So show up and get paid.
Your brain wants to keep you safe and it will tell you to play a smaller game. One where you don’t commit to going ALL in. But your people – the ones out there who need you to show up in their lives and help – are waiting.
And if you got hit with a larger bill than you expected, maybe all you need is a system in place to save a percentage of your earnings as you go. Then you can take joy in seeing that money accumulate and enjoy the safety which comes with it. My tip: Put it in a separate, untouchable account.
There are so many ways in which wellness practitioners don’t earn the money they’re capable of and feelings about paying taxes is just one of them. But you can change that today by consciously telling yourself that there are enough people and enough money to sustain your business, personal life AND pay your tax bill.
And yes, it’s criminal that large companies get away with not paying their share of taxes, but I was brought up on benefits so every time I pay my taxes I feel privileged that I’m in a position to do so.
When I pay my taxes, I spend time visualising where I want that money to go – health care services and schools.
And I have fun thinking about how much more I’m going to pay the following year.
